Falconry is considered to be one of the oldest sports known to man, originating some 4,000 years ago in Asia.
In Medieval Times falconry was the only sure way of catching small game on the move. Many of the training methods employed for hundreds of years are still in use today.
Falconry originated in China over four thousand years ago, but was widely practiced in European and Arab nations. Early Spanish explorers of the New World also found that Indians in Mexico practiced falconry. Montezuma, the Aztec emperor, had elaborate facilities for over 50 hunting hawks.
In Elizabethan England, falconry was very popular with dignity, and a man's social rank determined the kind of hawk he could keep. Falconry slowly fell into a long-term decline after firearms were developed.
